Analysts
The first type is the analysts. Analysts are people who embrace rationality and
impartiality, excelling in intellectual debates and scientific or technical
fields. They are fiercely independent, open minded and strong willed and
imaginative. They approach things from many things from a single minded
perspective and being far more interested in what works and what is provable
over what satisfy everyone. These traits make Analysts excellent strategic
thinkers, but also cause difficulties when it comes to social pursuits.
INTJ
The Mastermind/Scientist/Strategist - imaginative and strategic
thinkers, with a plan for everything!
Description: The INTJ or
Mastermind/Scientist is often seen as cold minded, manipulative or just plan strategic
in everything they do. they are problem solvers and eager to improve systems
and processes with their innovative ideas. They see possibility for improvement
at work, home or in themselves. They are logical thinkers and love complex
problem solving. They are very selective
in their relationships, preferring to associate with people they find
intellectually stimulating on some level or people that require a lot of thought
to figure out.
INTJ is
one of the rarest of the strategically capable personality types. INTJ form
just 2% of the population and mostly they are male. It is a challenge for them
to find a like-minded person who is able to keep up with their intellectualism
and chess like maneuvering. People with INTJ types are imaginative yet decisive
and ambitious yet private, amazingly curious but they do not squander their
energy.
INTJ’s are typically reserved and serious and seem
to spend a lot of time thinking on their own. They are curious and often want
to know the principle behind the way things are. If asked a question they will
often give a very complex answer. They are critical thinkers and often find
ways to be more efficient in things they do. They can be blunt in their
presentation however and often communicate in terms of the larger strategy,
leaving out tiny details.
The INTJ’s hobbies would tend to be things that challenge
them to solve issues, like Video games, reading, independent sports and things
like running and marathons.
Strengths: INTJ’s have a strategic mind
and absorb knowledge, seeking it out even when they are not working towards
something. They are also very confident in what they know and work well
independently. They are creative and logical all at the same time and take
responsibility for their own actions easily. Like a pit bull once they have a
task in their sights they are determined to have it completed. They are also
open minded, but only to logic and proof. They are great at being “Jack of all
trades” because of their hard working nature and determination.
Weakness:
INTJ’s
can be arrogant and falsely believing that they have resolved all the pertinent
issues of a matter and close themselves off form other options. They are also
very judgmental and forget that there are emotions involved in arguments,
leaning more towards the logical components of an argument completely. Those
that embrace emotion are often seen as illogical and dismissed by INTJ’s. They
also are overly analytical and will use their mind to work on issues, but in
places that logic does not help they dismiss the situation. The INTJ’s also loath
a highly structured environment and must understand the rules and regulations
before following them, if they are not logical rules they rebel against them.
As they use logic over emotion they tend to be clueless in situations that
require empathy and interactions with others.
Famous:
: Vladimir
Putin, Rudy Giuliani, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powel, Lance Armstrong, Thomas
Jefferson, John F Kennedy, Agustus Caesar, Hannibal, Stephen Hawking, Isaac
Asimov, Sir Isaac Newton.
How
they fair in Karate: Most
INTJ students will do very well and work up to higher ranks. But they will also
be bull headed and if put in a leadership role they will be followed by most,
but may butt heads with others they see as peers that don’t train or study
Karate the same way. Stout traditionalists they won’t want to see change and
any change will throw them into chaos. They are also efficiency nuts and innovative
thinkers so they will often do well on their own time studying privately and
going through Kata, movement skills or Kihon to find out the key elements and
see how to adjust them to be more efficient.
How to
teach them Karate: The
INTJ will want to know why things work more than just do it! They will want to
research things and find out how things are done, if they work better in
different ways and once they find a way they feel is good it will be very
difficult to steer them in other directions. Approach them with logic and facts
or you will lose them, they won’t take “Because I said so” as an answer. Let
them explore the net and watch videos, go to different seminars and when they
come back they will have lessons to teach the Sensei, always going into detail
about how things are better done a specific way, they don’t have a lot of tact
so you will need to take their attitude with a grain of salt.
What to
Expect:
Independent students that study hard and deeply and will be great supporters
and often rise to the point of being executives in the organization or run
things, they are very logical and strategic as well always thinking in the
future not the now. They can be a pain as they are better planners and
organizers than doers.
Conclusion: Most of what an instructor
will do with an INTJ is direct the student and make minor adjustments. The
Students often excel at some aspects of Karate and often bring in outside
knowledge to the training. The one area that the student will have issues with
is interactions with others. They will prefer Kata and Kihon over Kumite and
social events will be seen as tedious and wasteful of their time. They have a
very complex personality and will be drawn to deep introspection of every
detail of the training and will see the chaos of Kumite as loathsome for their
training.
INTP
The Puzzle solver/Architect/Thinker - Innovative inventors with an
unquenchable thirst for knowledge!
Description: Preoccupied with theory and
searching for universal laws behind everything they see, the INTP is the
Thinker of the group of 16! Seeking to understand everything around them they
are driven to research and contemplate. Often viewed as detached and
analytical, they are often oblivious to the world around them and others
feelings or even existence. To the Thinker, life is an ongoing inquiry into the
mysteries of the universe.
Making
up only 3% of the population. INTP’s pride themselves on their inventiveness
and Creativity, their unique perspective and vigorous intellect. Known as the
Philosopher and Architect or the Dreamy professor, the INTP’s have been
responsible for many scientific discoveries through history. They love Patterns
and science and theory almost become a hobby, making it a bad idea to lie to an
INTP, they will see the patterns and see through the lies. They are a bit
scattering minded and will share thoughts with people that are not fully
developed, making them quirky and unusually open. They like to throw ideas out
there and see who they can debate against and work on their own perspective and
opinion before they are even finished forming the idea.
Strengths: Great analysts and abstract
thinkers the INTP’s like to find impossible situations or calculations and
solve them. The INTP can be very imaginative and original in finding answers to
specific questions and use a very open minded approach to solving issues.
Sometimes verging on the ridiculously creative the INTP will go to any length
to find an answer. The INTP is also very enthusiastic with new ideas and while
they are often a reserved personality they will express themselves openly
without thought in specific movements. They are also very honest and straight
forwards, which can be a good thing and a fault as they often say the wrong
things even though they are correct and hurt people’s feelings.
Weakness:: INTP’s are often seen as
insensitive and caught up in logic to the point they forget how to interact
with others on a proper level. They are private and withdrawn and while they
have huge insight into the world around them they often do not share and forget
about putting them in a social setting! Most people have a hard time getting
into the INTP’s bubble of trust and if they ever break that trust they cannot
get back in. They are also very absent minded and forget things that they don’t
see as part of their challenges, They forget meals, miss sleep and forget about
health issues or meetings. The INTP can be seen as condescending as well
because they cannot connect with others and still live in a mental state of
rational over feelings and don’t see that what they say can be hurtful.
They also feel that they have to simplify everything for others and are
irritated by this. INTP’s are also rule breakers, if it gets in the way
of logic or their need to find an answer they ignore them and give little weight
to authority figures who are cramping their pursuit of answers. The INTP is
also socially awkward and an introvert so they prefer small groups or solitude.
If forced into a group environment they prefer like-minded people. They also
second guess themselves and go back to re do work that they have already done
to give validity to the work. They don’t commit to decisions easily and often
work and rework theories and delay completion of any task for longer than
necessary verifying the results many times.
Famous:
Socrates,
Blaise Pascal, Charles Darwin, Carl Jung, Albert Einstein, Dwight D Eisenhower,
Gerald ford.
How
they fair in Karate: they
tend to lean towards Kumite and Bunkai studies as they are both ways of
overcoming issues and researching through patterns. They are very exciting to
watch in their creativity and as long as they are released from any social or
structural rules they will do very well in this. Not great instructors because
they have a hard time connecting with others and tend to come across as
insensitive to others, also they have very little interest in following or
leading others, they do however make great athletes and Kumite people.
How to
teach them Karate: Don’t
take what they say personally. They tend to say things and react to people and
instructors as well as they can, which is not often very good. They are often
condescending and don’t realize it, it’s important to call them on this in
class so it does not affect others. When teaching the INTP let them explore and
try and get them doing light Kumite and working bunkai as if they are puzzles
and they will thrive.
What to
Expect: Other
than some very socially awkward moments, the INTP will be very good at sparring
but not so much teaching others. They tend to think of themselves a bit too
much and lack the ability to really care about the students on a deeper level.
Those that do progress to the next level and become teachers may show a
different side to students, the one that is about puzzle solving over just
repetitions. Even with the negative thinking about teaching they are a valuable
commodity for any Dojo as they think things through differently and often have
a great memory for details, they just need to work on the soft skills.
Conclusion:
INTP
types are very socially awkward and would benefit greatly from opening up a bit
and being part of a Karate program, however you have to be careful with them
and never ever feed them “A line”! They can see right through your “Sales”
attempt. Let them know that physically they may need work but keep in mind they
will often “know” more about a subject than the instructor does. Keep them calm
in class by letting them sit out of the lime light and keep them engaged in
conversation, be honest and warm because even though they can be inappropriate
their feelings are easily harmed but also they can be incredibly loyal as
students and friends if you learn to see their unique views and habits for what
it is…signs of genius.
ENTJ
The Executive/ The Commander - Bold, imaginative and
strong willed leaders, always finding a way or making one!
Description: ENTJ’s are natural born
leaders! They have charisma and confidence and project authority in the why
they draw crowds together behind a common goal. However, they are also driven
by a ruthless level of rationality and use their drive with this in mind.
Determined and sharp minded they focus on achieving the goals. Great at
business and governing they often run over the other personality types that are
less “out their” than them. The ENTJ is achievement goal oriented, they are not
happy with the hunt…they need the KILL to be happy. However it’s not often
physical in nature, they seek power, money and any “trophy” that shows they
have success.
They
love a challenge but firmly want to see what the success is at achieving their
goal. They are Brilliant Entrepreneurs and thing very strategically and can
hold a long term focus while going through steps to get to that point. They
make powerful business leaders but push their goals through sheer will power
and often don’t make good connections beyond the “Salesman” type social
encounter.
Dominant
and relentless in negotiations and often unforgiving, they are very strong at
influencing others. ENTJ’s often don’t care about others feelings or thoughts
of them as long as they are seen as successful people. They also recognize
talent in others and build solid teams of effective people to help with their
successes. True emotional expression is not the strong suit of a ENTJ,
typically it’s their extroverted nature that makes them avoid emotional
displays of any kid in place of more logical displays of proportioned feelings.
The
ENTJ is a powerhouse and they cultivate an image of being larger than life
and often they are. They have the “Fake it till you make it” mentality and will
build support teams and work teams to assist in both image and actual success.
Strengths: ENTJ’s are super-efficient and
energetic! They seek out and see inefficiency’s not just as a problem in its
own right but also it irritates them and they see it as sabotage and as
the result of irrationality or laziness. They don’t see this as taxing, it
energizes them and they find plans and time to implement them to squash these
issues. They are also Self Confident and Strategic thinkers. They would never
have self-doubt about any plan they put into effect and think long term, not
minding moment to moment chaos and crisis they tend to think past that and
build plans to avoid such issues. They are also very strong willed and
charismatic or inspiring people. They don’t give up when it gets tough and they
see challenge for what it is an obstacle to work through. They also are natural
leaders and will often draw people to them with their charisma and form strong
groups of followers that would do anything for them.
Weakness::
Stubborn
and dominant they can annoy and irritate people who don’t see eye to eye with
them. The self-confidence and will power often is over bearing and puts people
off. They will not debate and are often very dismissive and arrogant around
those they feel are “lesser” than themselves. They can also be very intolerant
of others and shockingly unsupportive of ideas that are not their own or don’t
work towards their own goals and even more so of ideas and goals that are not
their own that are based on emotional considerations. They also don’t hesitate
to shoot down people, ideas or issues that don’t mesh with their views. Seen as
cold and ruthless often they obsess over efficiency and their own goals and are
incredibly insensitive to others. They also handle their emotions poorly and
are distant from others on any real level. People with this personality type
often trample on others feelings and emotionally are distant even in closer
relationships.
Famous:
Steve
Jobs, Franklin D Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Harrison Ford, Steve Martin, Al Gore
Jim Carrey
How
they fair in Karate: The
ENTJ is a great leader of people, as long as you don’t mind small groups of
likeminded people. They will be difficult students because of their attitude
towards things they don’t agree with and because they are extroverted they will
be the first to speak out. Most ENTJ’s won’t last long in Karate because it is
not purely logical in its approach to training and they will find things to
pick apart. You are far more likely to run into them as the “PARENTS” of the
student you are trying to help out and will have to turf them due to their
attitude. They are a night mare to deal with and probably won’t be worth the
stress out!
How to
teach them Karate: if you
are unlucky enough to get a Executive in your class keep the drama down by
teaching to the point, explaining the process and telling them off the bat that
there is an etiquette and appropriate level of talking in class. Also,
demonstrating ON the executive is perfect, it keeps them knowing that something
actually works and also lets them know that they are not the leader, which will
put them in their place. They tend to try and take over a situation
regardless and they need to be shown that they are not in control or command.
They will like Kata and Kihon training as it qualifies what they know already
and can give them some sense of accomplishment.
What to
Expect:
Executives will be very difficult to deal with in some ways because they are by
the book, but bull headed and difficult to deal with. They will push the limits
of socially accepted questioning and behavior and will challenge instructor’s
authority. It is best to avoid dealing with them if they are parents because
they often come across as bullies and as students they will be a challenge as
well. Give them lots of work and little time to question you.
Conclusion:
Their strong will and powerful logical ability to reason make them great
leaders of industry, incredibly capable commanders in times of war and very
effective on your side as a leader into a challenging situation, but they lack
the social graces to lead a club or organization as they will not actually care
about the students or instructors under them if they have issues that need to
be worked out that are anything but logistics. The trick as an instructor is
teaching them to relax and just enjoy the process of Karate and not look at
each belt as a goal!
ENTP
The Inventor/Visionary - smart and curious thinkers who
cannot resist an intellectual challenge!
Description: No one loves the process
of mental sparring more than ENTP’s! They are into the challenge of putting
logical arguments against other logical arguments and do it for the sheer
thrill of the process, not with any goal or destination in mind. They enjoy exercising
their intellect and wit and broad base of knowledge base and are capable of
connecting various ideas to prove their point.
A
strange quirk with ENTP’s is that they will argue a point tirelessly even
if they don’t actually believe in it as they can step into another person’s
shoes to argue a truth from another perspective, which makes them the perfect
devil’s advocate. They are completely honest but uncompromisingly
dedicated to logic and challenges that are purely cerebral.
The
arguments they take up are normally just to seek a different point of view and
expand their knowledge and understanding of a subject but it is often confused
with the sort of mutual understanding that Diplomats take up, they are seeking
to attack an idea from every angle and every side. The ENTP is an idea
person however, they don’t implement or actualize things. They would rather
come up with an idea and work it through than execute a process. They don’t do
well with authority as they like to question everything, often just for the joy
of doing so and this can be vexing for any authority figure in dealing with the
ENTP’s.
Strengths: ENTP’s know a lot of
stuff…about a lot of stuff. They never pass up an opportunity to learn stuff,
they especially love abstract concepts. The information does not have to be
attached to anything particular or for any reason, just that it is out there.
They are also Original thinkers and loath falling into any patterns of thought.
They don’t attach to traditional thinking and pride themselves on not really
submitting to the norm. They brainstorm well and often will take an issue and
find multiple solutions to it and finding the best ones to use to correct
issues or meet a goal. They will go over every aspect and facet of a solution
to rule out any issues that they may create as well. They are also very
charismatic people. They have a way with words and a quick wit that others
often find intriguing. Their ability to find novel ways to solve issues and the
way they can convince others with different angles. The ENTP is also a
very energetic person when it comes to mental, logical and rational challenges.
They can be seen very impressive in their enthusiasm and energy, having no
qualms with putting in long days and nights to find solutions.
Weakness::
they
are often seen as being insensitive to others, they misjudge the feelings of
others and push debates far too far past people tolerance levels. They don’t
consider emotion and as such debates are magnified beyond worry of how the
other person feels. They are also very argumentative, which adds to this issue.
They enjoy the mental exercises of debate to the point that they engage in this
exercise and seem like they are just arguing with their counterpart. They are
also rather intolerant of others if they cannot back up their own ideas and
find it difficult to focus on essential skills beyond the debate. They are also
very interested in concepts but not application. They thrive in the realm of
mental debate but shy away from and often loath physical actualization. The
concepts they have can be adapted and debated but getting out and actually
building something or doing something is not of any interest to them. ENTP
personalities often lose interest with the consequences of their plans and
never actually see them come to completion.
Famous:
John
Adams, James A Garfield , Thomas Edison, George Carlin, Alfred Hitchcock, Tom
Hanks, David Spade, Celine Dion, Alexander the Great.
How
they fair in Karate: while
socially awkward and often seen as being a bit of a pushy person and
insensitive they do very well in Kumite and other activities that require the
puzzle solving skills that a INTP also thrives at but they won’t be as
difficult to handle as their introverted counterparts. Far more social they also
will do well on teams and will help others with strategy and planning for
Kumite and testing’s. they will be awkward instructors if they get that far but
will offer lots to those that train with them. Not having a grasp of people
skills they may lose some of the more sensitive kinds but will also bring a
great deal of knowledge to the table.
How to
teach them Karate:
Inventors or ENTP tend to be more dynamic in their research and expression of
Karate. They dig deep and they find ways to explore things. Kumite and Bunkai
are going to be specialties. When you teach them give them a bit more freedom
in training and encourage them to explore in Ippon Kumite and Jiyu Kumite.
What to
Expect: They
can be great students, great team mates and fantastic instructors. You have to
give them space and watch them grow. However it is also important to keep them
busy and directed.
Conclusion: always able to find a
debate/argument that they want to engage in the wit and intelligence and
curiosity of the ENTP is sound and powerful. They are a force to be reckoned
with mentally. They will find weak links in arguments and like a laser go
directly to them and create strong solutions to issues, but they often fail in
implementation and only are focused on the types of issues and work they like.
They don’t connect with others well and often chase away perspective friends
and mates with their challenging minds.
